Breastfeeding Tip

>> Thursday, May 6, 2010

I recently attended a breastfeeding class, and it was extremely informative and encouraging. I wanted to share a tip that Kristi, the lactation specialist, gave. The baby will need just two things in the first weeks after birth:  1) to be close to you  and 2) to receive breast milk.

If the baby is not latching on and is fussing and restless, it may be a good idea to try stripping off the clothes of both of you and your baby and lying quietly skin to skin. Let the baby take in the warmth and security. When the baby is comforted and secure, then gently put the baby to the breast.

Childbirth is a time when a woman's power and strength emerge full force, but it is also a vulnerable time, and a time of many changes presenting opportunities for personal growth.

We have a secret in our culture, and it's not that birth is painful. It's that women are strong.
